Car insurance as a new driver in Ontario, explained.
Why your first quotes look so high, whether you need your own policy yet, and the discounts you should be asking for, including two the regulator says you're owed as you move up from your G1.
Why it's expensive
Ontario's regulator (FSRA) lists five factors insurers weigh: which insurance company you choose, years licensed, years accident-free, your vehicle, and your location. We deliberately don't print a "typical" premium number here. Real quotes range from roughly $2,400 to $8,000 a year, which is too wide a range to be useful. Get actual quotes instead.
Do G2 drivers need their own insurance?
The requirement attaches to the vehicle, not your licence level. If the car is in your own name, you need your own policy. If you're driving a parent's or household car, you need to be listed on that car's policy. Tell your insurer as soon as you're licensed.
Driving your parents' car
FSRA's own tip for young drivers: being listed as a named occasional driver on a parent's policy is usually much cheaper than being the principal driver of your own vehicle. Being listed incorrectly is the kind of thing that surfaces, expensively, at claim time.
How to lower it
Ontario's graduated licensing discount: insurers should apply a 10% discount across all coverages once you reach G2 (if you have no chargeable convictions or at-fault accidents), for one year, and another 10% once you reach full G, under the same condition. That wording is "should receive," not automatic, so ask your insurer to confirm it's applied. Beyond that: a driver-training discount tied to BDE completion, a winter tire discount (every insurer must offer one), multi-vehicle/multi-policy discounts (5–15%), renewal/loyalty discounts (5–20%), group rates through an employer or association, student discounts, low-mileage discounts, and vehicle alarm discounts. The one lever that outlasts all the others: a clean record, year over year.
"What's the cheapest car / best company?"
We deliberately don't publish lists here. A vehicle's repair and claims cost matters more than its sticker price, so get quotes before you buy rather than after. Shop around across companies at every renewal, since the cheapest insurer can change year to year, but don't switch mid-policy-year.
Where insurance meets the rest of your journey
You need proof of insurance to register a car at ServiceOntario, before registration. Winter tires double as a discount and a genuine safety item. And the BDE driver-training discount ties straight back into your licensing stage.
