Common questions
Getting licensed in Ontario, answered
How do I get a full G driver's licence in Ontario?
Ontario uses a three-test graduated system: pass the G1 knowledge test, then the G2 road test, then the full G road test. Each stage removes more restrictions until you hold a full, unrestricted licence. GoGo walks you through all three, plus the optional BDE course in between.
How long does it take to get a full licence in Ontario?
As fast as 20 months if you complete BDE (8 months from G1 to G2, then 12 months from G2 to full G), or 24 months without it (12 months, then 12 months). The whole process has to be completed within 5 years of getting your G1. VERIFY-MTO
Do I have to take BDE (Beginner Driver Education)?
No, it's optional. But completing an approved BDE course shortens your G1-to-G2 wait by 4 months and can qualify you for a new-driver insurance discount.
What does getting licensed in Ontario cost overall?
Your G1 test fee covers your first attempt at both the G2 and full G road tests, so a retest is the main extra cost if you don't pass on the first try. BDE and in-vehicle lessons are priced separately by each school. PRICE
I already have my G2. Can I still use GoGo?
Yes. Jump straight into the G2 stage of the journey; you don't need to start from G1.
Does GoGo replace DriveTest or the Ministry of Transportation?
No. GoGo helps you prepare for each test and find a vetted school for in-vehicle training, but you still book and take your official tests through DriveTest, Ontario's government-run testing service.
Is GoGo free to use?
Guides and blog content are free to read. Prep courses and in-vehicle training through partner schools are paid, with pricing set per course or per school.
I'm a newcomer to Canada with a foreign licence. Do I still start at G1?
It depends on where your existing licence is from; some jurisdictions have a licence exchange agreement with Ontario that lets you skip some stages. Check directly with ServiceOntario before assuming you need to start over. VERIFY-MTO
