Frequently asked questions
What is the G2 road test?
The G2 road test is the first road test in Ontario's graduated licensing system. It is officially called the G1 exit test. Passing it moves you from a G1 licence to a G2 licence.
When can I take my G2 road test?
Normally, you can take the G2 road test after holding your G1 licence for 12 months. If you successfully complete an approved Beginner Driver Education (BDE) course, you can take the test after 8 months.
How do I book my G2 road test?
You can book your road test through Ontario's DriveTest system. You will choose a DriveTest location, date, and available appointment time.
What is tested on the G2 road test?
The examiner tests your basic driving skills, including left and right turns, stopping, lane changes, traffic lights/stop signs/yield signs, parallel parking, three-point turns, one-way streets, driving in residential areas, and observation and safe driving habits.
Do I have to drive on the highway during the G2 road test?
The G2 road test mainly evaluates basic city and residential driving skills. Highway driving is primarily assessed later during the G road test.
How long is the G2 road test?
The exact length can vary depending on the test location, traffic, and route. You should allow additional time for check-in and the vehicle inspection before the test.
What do I need to bring to my G2 road test?
Bring your valid driver's licence, a vehicle in good working condition, glasses or contact lenses if required for driving, and payment if an applicable test fee is due. Ontario recommends arriving at least 30 minutes before your road test appointment.
Can I use my own car for the G2 road test?
Yes. You can use your own vehicle or another suitable vehicle, provided it is properly licensed, insured, and in safe working condition.
Can I use my driving instructor's car for the test?
Yes. Many students take their G2 road test using their driving school or instructor's vehicle.
What happens if my vehicle is not safe for the road test?
The examiner may refuse to conduct the test if the vehicle is unsafe or does not meet testing requirements. Check lights, signals, tires, brakes, horn, seat belts, and other basic safety items before arriving.
Can I use the backup camera or parking assist during my G2 test?
You cannot rely on electronic driving aids such as automatic parking systems, lane-monitoring systems, cruise control, or backup cameras to demonstrate required driving skills. You must show proper observation techniques, such as mirror and shoulder checks.
What happens if I make a mistake during the test?
A small mistake does not necessarily mean you will fail. The examiner evaluates your overall driving performance, safety, observation, vehicle control, and ability to follow traffic laws.
What happens if I fail my G2 road test?
You can take the test again. Ontario requires you to wait at least 10 days before another road-test attempt. The examiner will also provide a report showing areas that need improvement.
How many times can I take the G2 road test?
You can retake the test if you do not pass, as long as your licence remains valid and you meet the applicable requirements. A road-test fee applies to additional attempts.
What happens immediately after I pass the G2 road test?
Once you pass, you move from G1 to a G2 licence. You can then drive independently without an accompanying driver.
Can I drive alone once I have my G2?
Yes. A G2 licence allows you to drive independently on Ontario roads and highways, subject to G2 restrictions.
Are there restrictions with a G2 licence?
Yes. G2 drivers must maintain zero blood alcohol and cannot carry more passengers than there are working seat belts. Additional nighttime passenger restrictions apply to drivers aged 19 and under.
What are the nighttime passenger restrictions for G2 drivers under 20?
For the first 6 months of your G2, if you are 19 or younger, you may carry only one passenger aged 19 or younger between midnight and 5 a.m. After 6 months, you may carry up to three passengers aged 19 or younger during those hours. Certain exceptions apply for immediate family members or when a qualified fully licensed driver is present.
How long do I have to wait before taking my G road test?
Normally, you must hold your G2 licence for at least 12 months before taking the G road test.
What comes after the G2 licence?
Your next step is the G road test, also called the G2 exit test. It evaluates more advanced driving skills, including expressway driving. Once you pass, you receive your full G licence.
Is Module 1 really free?
Yes, it opens directly, no purchase needed.
